I am so grateful to be doing what I love after battling health issues that made it difficult for me to work much at all for almost a whole decade of my young life. At the early age of 21, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. After surgery and two rounds of radiation, I was able to return to and graduate from college. I then spent close to four years in Italy before the onset of debilitating migraine headaches that led to frequent hospitalization.
At age 27, I tested positive for the BRCA 1 genetic mutation, which indicates a very elevated risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Given my mother’s history of breast cancer at age 31 and my own battle with cancer, I decided to address this risk by having a preventive double mastectomy and reconstruction at age 33 and a hysterectomy at age 36. While these decisions may not be for everyone, I strongly believe that every individual is entitled to information and empowerment when it comes to one’s health. I was able to overcome the emotional fear of illness through education about my genetic risk and eventual action.
The Adesso Supports pieces are items I have designed to give back to causes Adesso supports. 100% of the profits from Adesso Supports pieces available on our website go to The Butterfly Project of FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered), Dream Foundation and Tribal Trust Foundation. Adesso also donates jewelry to Dream Foundation to be given to dreamers and their families. In addition, Adesso participates in ongoing fundraising events with the Tribal Trust Foundation.
My goal with Adesso is to inspire others to find their own individual path, create a life that authentically resonates within and create ways to share that passion with others. Everyone will have a different story and a unique journey, but I think there is a common thread that connects us all as we seek ways to live our best life. For me personally, I eventually found great hope and motivation through my medical experiences that led to my establishing a life built around my passion for creating jewelry and sharing beauty with others. I hope that my journey will be an inspiration to others.
